Distiller Charles Bryant was soon joined by his brother Glenn and friend Luigi Marucchi who shared the desire to create something really special. When it came to the still, they decided to re-invent the wheel by custom-designing a traditional copper still to their precise specifications. The research into molecular distillation revealed that some of the delicate botanicals would be better preserved by being distilled under vacuum and blended later. What started off as an exploration of technology and botany evolved into a passion – and that’s how Six Dogs Gin came into the world.
Karoo Gin
Six Dogs Karoo is a delicate and balanced Gin of twelve select botanicals. Its distinguishing botanicals are grown on our farm, which intersects three different bioregions including the succulent Karoo. Sip it and you will pick up paired notes of juniper and wild lavender that introduce the Karoo. What follows is a fresh medley of citrus including limes, mandarins and farm grown lemon buchu. Cassia, chamomile and angelica bind the heart of the Gin while the delicate flower of the acacia thorn adds a top note of soft sweetness. Six Dogs Karoo is best enjoyed as is, over ice and with a good tonic. It needs no garnish!
Blue Gin
Six Dogs Blue derives its name from the blue pea flower (Clitoria Ternatea), an antioxidant and aphrodisiac in traditional medicine. As chance would have it, ‘Blue’ is also the name of the smallest dog in our pack of six. The infusion of blue pea gives the Gin its striking yet completely natural colour. The alchemy of this unusual botanical is further revealed when the Gin is mixed with a good tonic, changing its colour to light pink. Not for the timid, Blue is a Gin to inspire the novel you never got around to writing, to bring out a little sinner and singer in you and to raise in a toast at the end of a hard-fought battle.
Pinotage Stained Gin
Six Dogs Pinotage Stained is the love child of Six Dogs Gin and our neighbour’s highly prized block of pinotage grapes. We distil this Gin in small batches through generous quantities of juniper and fresh citrus. The grapes are handpicked, raced up the road to the distillery, de-stalked and placed into tanks to macerate. Here the Gin gets its colour and taste profile from the deep red essence of this truly South African cultivar. Some love it neat over ice while others dilute with a splash of good tonic to create a fusion of terroir, cultivar and the finest Gin we could make. You could say this Gin is an alchemy between neighbours, friends, nature, and of course, six faithful dogs.
Honey Lime Gin
Six Dogs Honey Lime is the inevitable result of a sustainability project that began when South African bee conservation company, Bee Smiths, approached us to relocate rescued bees to the farm where our distillery is situated. While our six dogs soon learnt to keep a respectful distance from the hives, we learnt that the combination of farm honey and home-grown limes, when blended with the finest botanical spirit, proved irresistible. Sip it and you will taste a subtle sweetness that cuts through the zestiness of the limes. Six Dogs Honey Lime is best enjoyed with ice and a good Indian tonic on a hot summer’s day.
Ours is about 3 feet by 3 feet, and on our left is the account's block. The sales block is down the hall.
We're joking. Obviously.
Ours is at least 5 by 5, and on Wednesdays we're allowed to write in coffee shops to maintain the illusion that we're "successful" and "writerly".
Coming up with a write up for the simple sake of a write up does, however, become difficult when we're staring complete lack of creativity right in the face. But apparently asking management to cancel all the deals for the day isn't a viable fix.
As they so delicately put it, it'd be like a comedian having the option to suddenly cancel a show if they're not feeling up to it. Not on our watch, they said. You'll do a write up whether you like it or not, they said. And be funny, they said.
So here we are, doing a write up and being funny.
