Rogue: The Inside Story of SARS Elite Crime-busting Unit by Johann van Loggerenberg & Adrian Lackay

The story of a ‘rogue unit’ operating within the South African Revenue Service (SARS) became entrenched in the public mind following a succession of sensational reports published by the Sunday Times in 2014. The unit, the reports claimed, had carried out a series of illegal spook operations: they had spied on President Jacob Zuma, run a brothel, illegally bought spyware and entered into unlawful tax settlements. In a plot of Machiavellian proportions, head of the elite crime-busting unit Johann van Loggerenberg and many of SARS’s top management were forced to resign. Van Loggerenberg’s select team of investigators, with their impeccable track record of busting high-level financial fraudsters and nailing tax criminals, lost not only their careers but also their reputations. Now, in this extraordinary account, they finally get to put the record straight and the rumours to rest: there was no ‘rogue unit’. The public had been deceived, seemingly by powers conspiring to capture SARS for their own ends. Shooting down the allegations he has faced one by one, Van Loggerenberg tells the story of what really happened inside SARS, revealing details of some of the unit’s actual investigations.

How Long Will South Africa Survive? by RW Johnson

In 1977, RW Johnson’s best-selling How Long Will South Africa Survive? provided a controversial and highly original analysis of the survival prospects of the apartheid regime. Now, after more than twenty years of ANC rule, he believes the situation has become so critical that the question must be posed again. He moves from an analysis of Jacob Zuma’s rule to the increasingly dire state of the South African economy, concluding that the country is heading towards a likely International Monetary Fund bail-out which will, in turn, lead to a regime change of some kind. Johnson’s analysis is strikingly original and cogently argued. He has for several decades now been a senior international commentator on South African affairs, known for his lucid analysis and complete lack of deference towards the conventional wisdom. He writes without fear or favour. This is a book for every South African.

It's the little things...

The long weekend can seem too long, if your paycheck hasn't arrived yet. We thought about that and made sure every single one of our deals comes in at under R400 today. That means you can do something fun this weekend, like visit Ratanga junction before it shuts down forever.

Yup. Cape Town's favourite amusement park is officially shutting the doors for good on May 1st 2018.

It shouldn't really come as a shock. Ratanga Junction opened in December 1998 and it's kind of been closing down ever since. But now that it's official, we can't help but feel we need to hop on to the Cobra and hang on to our hats once more for old times' sake.

Some retail therapy should soften the blow of the bomb we just dropped.
