About

Created in the very heart of Stellenbosch, our hand crafted wines reflect the passion we have for this region and are a faithful representation of the place where they were born. The name Dombeya was the original name of the estate, paying homage to the Dombeya tree that is native to South Africa, with extraordinarily beautiful flowers that bring South Africa’s spring season to life. Dombeya trees are dotted around our vineyards, their cycle of regeneration and renewal a fitting symbol of modern day South Africa.

Made with extensive attention to detail, the Dombeya by Haskell Vineyards range represents outstanding value for money, and has been listed in many of the top restaurants in the world. In addition, Dombeya by Haskell Vineyards is also the wine of preference for Prince Albert of Monaco, having been served at the Royal Wedding celebrations in 2011.

Tasting Notes

The wine has flavours of lemon grass, loads of passion fruit, winter melon and hints of wet stone. The palate is crisp, fresh and enticingly fruity with a sweet fruity finish. The Semillon gives a softer mouth feel toward the end.

Serve with Tapas on a hot summer day, Melon and ham, fresh salads, Smoked Salmon, fish and Chicken.

Winemaker’s comment

This was the second consecutive year that we had a very dry pre-harvest season and irrigation was under immense pressure. Due to these conditions we had a smaller crop with smaller berries which gave more concentrated flavours. Luckily we also did not have any sudden heat waves during this harvest.

Vinification

The grapes were hand-harvested during the morning while they were still cool from the night temperatures. After destalking, skin maceration was in the press with loads of dry ice in order to keep the mash cool as well as protected from oxygen. Cold fermentation in stainless steel tanks gave us the fresh and crisp acidity as well as fruit expression in the wine.

Soil & Terroir

This wine is a blend of two cultivars Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. Both are grown in Stellenbosch on South-West facing slopes and soil with a 15% clay fraction. The Semillon make up less that 15% of the blend.
