The name game

Why do we give certain items of clothing names like 'jumper' or 'sweater', when they don't even jump or sweat, seriously? Or like, clam diggers and pedal pushers? Honestly, who even digs for clams?

When it comes to shoes, the names get a little more understandable. Like, you get hiking boots (for hiking), running shoes (for running) and tennis shoes (for... you get the idea.)
