About

Welgegund was established in 1777. The heritage wines, all handcrafted from old character plantings on our farm in Wellington, celebrate a unique combination of the decomposed granite terroir, the exceptional light and the timeless mastery of the winemaker, and offer an enduring expression of the classic Cape wine tradition so globally envied of this region for centuries.

The wine exhibits captivating complexity with lime, citrus and marmalade, initially evident, followed layers of quince, pear, stone fruit, nectarines and elderflower. The wine is rich with creamy tones alluring hints of refreshing lime and lemon. Made from a dryland trellised vineyard planted in 1974 – thus currently 44 years old. This vineyard yield around 2,8ton/ha, making the grapes and the wine extremely expensive. Very low yield of exceptional fruit. The vineyard face Northwest, with decomposed granite (extremely old) soil. The soil, adds to the minerality in the wine.
