Watercolour

Watercolour is a transparent paint that you apply thinned with water. The more water you use, the lighter the colour of the paint becomes. A good thing about working with watercolour is that you can apply many transparent layers of paint over one another. If a new colour is applied over a dry colour, optical mixing occurs: blue over yellow results in a green colour, whilst red over yellow results in orange. Important to know: watercolour paintings are not waterproof when dry.

It is best to use special watercolour paper when using watercolours. This gives the best results. You can use watercolours on both wet and dry paper. Dry paper allows you to work in sharp details, whereas on wet paper the colours gently flow.

Gouache

Gouache is an opaque paint that is thinned with water. Surfaces can be painted matt without leaving any stripes. However, it is also highly suited to detailed work. As this paint dries within a few minutes, it is very practical to use. Gouache is not waterproof when dry, which means that when you add a little water to the dried colours they can be reworked. Before Gouache can be used, it first has to be thinned with a little water otherwise it is too thick to use. The more water you add, the more transparent the paint becomes

The paint can be used on many grounds, such as paper, cardboard and wood.

Acrylic

Talens Art Creation acrylic colour is a modern and versatile type of paint based on 100% acrylic resin. The paint is pasty, has a silky gloss when dry and can be painted over quickly. Talens Art Creation can be used both straight from the tube and thinned with water. The paint is waterproof when dry. The drying time of acrylic colour is short. It is often less than an hour, depending on the thickness of the paint layer.

The colours are easy to mix and you can work on many different grounds as long as they are free of grease and dust and sufficiently absorbent. Examples are, of course, canvas and paper. Plaster, board, wood, stone and cement are, however, also good grounds.

Oil

Oil paint has a number of unique properties. The paint dries very slowly which allows you to ‘play’ with it for a long time. In other words: you can continue correcting your work and carry on painting for quite some time. Oil paint has the unique property of drying precisely as it has been applied; for example a brush stroke when dry is as sharp as it was when first applied. In addition, oil paint is the only paint of which the colours do not become darker or lighter when drying. You know precisely what you get.

Here at OneDayOnly we pride ourselves on two things:

Our remarkable ability to remember quotes from practically any movie, and our skill in catering to almost any person in South Africa.

The latter is the harder of the two, because A) we haven't met everyone in the R of SA and 2) our personal tastes can hardly be used as a benchmark for things other people may enjoy.

Still, through sheer determination and never-miss-an-episode viewings of Egoli and Generations, we like to think we hit the proverbial nail on the head more often than not.

And in the almost unfathomable event that we're completely wrong and nothing on our cyber-shelves appeals to you, we'd like to leave you with the following gem from Lord of the Rings:

"Use the force, Harry." - Edward Cullen.
